Buy Moving Boxes Sunshine Coast | Self Storage Coolum

New vs Used — Do You Really Need New Boxes?

With 20+ years in the removals industry across Australia and Asia, my teams and I have packed a lot of boxes. And one of the most common mistakes I see people make is buying the cheapest boxes they can find — or worse, grabbing random boxes from behind the supermarket.

Used boxes can work for light items, but here’s the truth: cardboard loses strength every time it gets wet or compressed. A box that’s been through one move already may look fine but can fail at the worst possible moment — halfway down the stairs with your grandmother’s crockery inside.

My strong recommendation is to always use double-ply (double wall) boxes for anything heavier than clothes or linen. They cost a little more but the protection they provide is worth every cent.

Get some good strong packing tape and make sure the bases are taped up tight — the heavier the items you’re putting in there, the more tape you need.

For fragile items, pack like the professionals do — use LOTS of packing paper. Particularly for glasses and crockery — paper is much better than bubble wrap, and it’s also biodegradable, so you can put it in your garden or compost when you unpack and feel good about yourself! Bubble wrap has its place, but it’s not great for fragile items — you may find your chances of breaking the stems on that favourite champagne glass is much higher packing it with bubble wrap than with packing paper.

Also watch out — some retailers like Bunnings sell two different quality levels in the same size box. The light boxes are ok for things like cushions or stuffed toys, but they are much less rigid than thicker double ply boxes. The price difference is small but the quality difference is significant. Always go for the heavier, stiffer box.

Where to Buy on the Sunshine Coast

Bunnings

Widely available across the Sunshine Coast. Good range of sizes. Just make sure you pick up the double wall version — both are on the shelf and look similar.

Officeworks

Convenient, reasonably priced, good for smaller boxes and document storage boxes. Not the strongest for heavy loads.

Mitre 10

Worth checking your local store. Stock varies but they often carry a decent range of moving boxes.

Caloundra Removals

Local removalist who sells quality moving boxes. A solid option if you’re in the southern end of the Coast.

Conroy Removals

A national removalist (part of the well regarded AMG Group) who sells quality moving boxes from their online box shop. Boxes can be delivered to your door anywhere in Australia, or picked up from their depot in Kallangur. A great option if you’re moving from anywhere on the Sunshine Coast or beyond. I used to work there — they’ll do a great job for you!

Local Removalists

This is often your best option and our top recommendation. Many Sunshine Coast removalists sell secondhand cartons cheaply or even give them away after jobs. These are often heavy duty commercial boxes that have only done one trip — built to a much higher standard than what you’ll find on the shelf at a hardware store. Buying from a local removalist keeps money in the local economy and supports small businesses in our community. Call around and ask — you might be surprised how easy it is to find a great deal.

Facebook Marketplace & Gumtree

Plenty of locals selling used boxes after a move, often for $1–2 each or free. Fine for clothes and linen, but inspect carefully before using for anything fragile or heavy.

One Last Tip

Whatever boxes you buy, don’t overload them. A good rule of thumb — if you can’t comfortably lift it with one hand on the bottom, it’s too heavy. Your back will thank you.
